Closed Windows

This photographic project departed from walking the streets of Jersey City, specifically what is now called the Powerhouse Arts District, a historic warehouse district in Downtown Jersey City, New Jersey, United States. Its name derives from the unused generating station Hudson and Manhattan Railroad Powerhouse.

In 2008, it was yet to be turned into lofts, condos and towers, most buildings were boarded up and windows were covered. I created this series not knowing this would become a testament of a point in time, where artists still lived in these buildings, and the streets were emply and abandonned.

Now the neighborhood has flourished with Art Galleries, Cafes, Clubs, Stores... and commuters from New York City walk their dogs at any hour of the day and night in sleek streets were few of the old buildings remain, redesigned from the inside out.
